UK loses its seat at International Court of Justice for first time after candidate withdrawn

The UK is set to lose its seat at the International Court of Justice for the first time in the UN body’s 71-year history.

The government has withdrawn candidate Christopher Greenwood after six rounds of votes with India’s Dalveer Bhandari ended in deadlock.

Zimbabwe's President Mugabe resigns

Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe has resigned, parliament speaker Jacob Mudenda has said.

A letter from Mr Mugabe said that the decision was voluntary and that he had made it to allow a smooth transition of power.

The surprise announcement halted an impeachment hearing that had begun against him.

Lawmakers roared in jubilation and people have begun celebrating in the streets.

Zimbabwe's ruling party has sacked Robert Mugabe as its leader, as pressure intensifies for him to step down as president.

Zanu-PF has also given Mr Mugabe, 93, until 10:00 GMT on Monday to resign as president, or face impeachment.

He is due to address the nation shortly, after he met military leaders who have called on him to step down.

ISIS claims responsibility for death of Nigerian soldiers in Damaturu

The Islamic State (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for an attack in Damaturu , the capital of Yobe State in Nigeria.

The incident led to the death of eight soldiers. A civilian was also killed, while five persons sustained injuries on Tuesday.
